NC Teaching Fellows Program at Meredith
Meredith College, one of the largest private women’s colleges in the United States, offers N.C. Teaching Fellows a dynamic educational experience enriched with opportunities to receive classroom experience, to learn from professional teachers, to volunteer for community projects and to travel and study abroad.
- The teacher education program at Meredith is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and by the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. www.meredith.edu/education
- Meredith offers Teaching Fellows a program of financial assistance that provides grant funds to help meet the cost of tuition, room and board. The scholarship award of $6,500 from the state is matched by Meredith. Each Teaching Fellow at Meredith receives $6500 per year as a loan/scholarship through the state of North Carolina. Additional grants are coordinated by the college to provide the Meredith Match. Last year, Meredith awarded an average total grant for first time Teaching Fellows freshmen of $23,631 per year. The Class of 2009 total Grant/Scholarship ranged from $13,100 to $29,100 per year based on the student's academic profile and demonstrated family need. For more information, please contact the Office of Financial Assistance at finaid@meredith.edu.
- Meredith Teaching Fellows participate in a superior academic program that blends the liberal arts, a major in the chosen academic field, and professional courses leading to teacher licensure. Read more about Meredith’s 40+ majors in Academics.
- Meredith Teaching Fellows may choose from a wide array of Study Abroad programs, many of which are available at no additional cost above Meredith’s tuition. Recently, Teaching Fellows have studied in England, France, Mexico, Brazil, Switzerland, Chile and Spain.
- At Meredith, Teaching Fellows gain valuable classroom experience by working in Wake County Public Schools each year they are in the program. As a junior, a public school teacher in the licensure area becomes a mentor teacher and will continue in that role as a cooperating teacher during the student teaching experience.
- Meredith offers Focus on Excellence, special series of cultural events and activities, to Teaching Fellows at no additional cost. See the 2010-2011 schedule for more information.
- At Meredith, the Teaching Fellows Program focuses on a special theme for each class year. The College offers a Seminar Series to support each theme. The themes are
- Freshmen: Success in College
- Sophomores: Learning to Teach, Learning to Serve
- Juniors: Teachers as Leaders
- Seniors: 21st Century Professionals

Additional Advantages of a Meredith College education
- At Meredith, Teaching Fellows will enjoy a 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Meredith students work closely with faculty members on undergraduate research, service learning projects, and other areas of academic interest. Meredith faculty are experts in their fields; 100% of the School of Education’s full-time faculty have earned a doctorate or the highest degree available in their fields.
- Teaching Fellows are required to complete a minimum of 15-17 credit hours of honors work, including an honors thesis. Some Fellows are invited to participate in the full Meredith College Honors Program.
- Meredith’s 225-acre campus in Raleigh provides Teaching Fellows with a capital city location and exciting opportunities to observe public education at the state and local levels.
- At Meredith, Teaching Fellows have the chance to develop strong leadership skills, which can be maximized in a women's college environment. Fellows may choose to take a leadership role in the program and participate in other campus groups—possibly heading up a major campus organization, as many Teaching Fellows have done.
- Meredith offers a career planning service that helps you develop job-search skills and networking that can assist you throughout your life.

The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program is one of the nation’s most ambitious teacher recruitment systems in the United States. The N.C. Public School Forum administers the program. Each year, the program selects 500 outstanding high school seniors to receive $26,000 scholarships/loans in exchange for their agreement to teach in a N.C. public school for four years following college graduation. Meredith is one of six private institutions selected to participate in the N.C. Teaching Fellows program. A total of 18 colleges and universities statewide participate.
